On June 14th, 1885, Bernard J. Cigrand, a 19-year-old teacher at Stony Hill School, placed a 10 inch, 38- star flag in a bottle on his desk then assigned essays on the flag and its significance. This observance commemorated Congresses adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777. This observance was also the beginning of Cigrand’s long years of devoted effort to bring about national recognition and observance of Flag Day. The crowning achievement of his life came at age fifty when President Wilson, on June 14, 1916, issued a proclamation calling for a nation wide observance of Flag Day.

It's
time to say good-bye
Our year has come to an end.
We've made more cherished memories
and many more new friends.
We've
watched your child learn and grow
and change from day to day.
We hope that all the things we've done
Have
helped in some small way.
So
it's with happy memories
We send them out the door,
With great hope and expectations
for what next year holds in store.
*** Reminder:
Your child must read 5 books this
summer.
All requirements and information
regarding the fifth grade have been given to the students.
Please be sure to read these documents. ***

Summer Prayer
Father,
Creator of all, thank You for summer!
Thank you for the warmth of the sun
and the increased daylight.
Thank You for the beauty I see all
around me and for the opportunity to
be outside and enjoy Your creation.
Thank You for the increased time I
have to be with my friends and family,
and for the more casual pace of the summer season.
Draw me closer to You this summer.
Teach me how I can pray no matter
where I am or what I am doing.
Warm my soul with the awareness of
Your presence and light my path with
Your Word and Counsel.
As I enjoy Your creation, create in me
a pure heart and a hunger and a thirst for You.
Amen
